Physics – A Definition

Welcome to the Fabulous Physics Website!

Before we go any further, let’s make sure that we have a basic idea of what the word physics really means and what Physics really is. The word physics comes from the Greek word physis, which means nature or natural things. Physics is a subject which, basically, provides you with very useful information about the universe around you and the sort of “rules” that it follows. These rules, or ways in which the universe works, do not just affect things here on Earth, but just about anywhere you care to look – including the Moon, the planets and the stars! So – you could say that physics is a very “far-reaching” subject. Whatever – it is certainly very useful to know something about it.

Who Fabulous Physics is For

Fabulous Physics covers all of the “Physical Processes” (Physics) Topics of National Curriculum Key Stage 3. In many places, however, it goes into more depth – helping you to prepare for studying the subject at GCSE Level as a single science, but also helping you to get to a point where you can actually apply what you have been studying to your environment.

For those of you who have already left school, well, this is also a book for you. It has been written with the intention that anyone with a very limited prior knowledge of the subject can understand it! To that end, do make sure that you know the meanings of all the words. The “Review Exercises” that are included at the end of each part of the book will help you. By doing them, you can become confident about what you have learned and be certain that you have understood it.

What are Review Exercises?

Each chapter of the book is accompanied by a series of review exercises. They can be done with the help of another person acting as a “coach” or you can do them by yourself.

They are not tests! In other words, you don’t do an exercise to see if you can do it. Instead, an exercise is repeated until you can do it!

The end result to go for, actually, is perfection! It may take a few goes but you’ll get there in the end – and it is definitely worth the effort. The confidence that this will give you will be quite remarkable – and may be something that you haven’t experienced for a long time.

Your Purpose for Studying Physics

Because we are living in a world made up of Matter, Energy, Space and Time (or M.E.S.T. for short), it is VERY useful to know what they really are and how they “behave”. The more you know about something, then, very often, the more you can take responsibility for it - and in many cases control it or have more influence over it! Wouldn’t you rather have some control over the environment around you rather than it controlling you all the time?

Knowing and applying Physics will often allow you to do just that! For example, by knowing how something works, such as a motor bike, you stand a better chance of figuring out what is wrong with it if it isn’t working and possibly allow you to repair it - and so make the M.E.S.T. do what you want it to do! Whatever you want to be, do or have in life, the subject of Physics will have something to do with it, because, very likely, you’ll be using M.E.S.T. in some way. Here are a few examples, just to give you the idea:

Job Title What Parts of Physics Used
Musician Sound
Artist Colours and Light
Dancer Forces and Motion
Chef Electricity and Heat
Environmental Scientist Earth and Atmosphere
Computer Scientist Electricity
Engineer ALL aspects of physics (Engineering is really all about using Physics)

You will find it very helpful to decide for yourself a purpose for studying Physics. For example, your purpose might be to learn more about light and sound because you want to go into the field of special effects for live performances in theatres. Or, it might be to learn more about electricity, so that you can understand and apply the information in a “Do-it-yourself” Manual about how to set up the electrical wiring for a new kitchen you want to install.

It may be that you will need to alter it a little, or change it completely before the end of this book. That’s alright – the important thing is that you have a purpose for studying Physics! Apart from anything else, it will give you greater motivation to study the subject.

Now that you are oriented and know how this book is to be studied to get the best results, you are ready to buy the book and get started on the first chapter! I wish you success!
